Exclude a Song from Playback in Music on Mac

At a glance

Deselect a song’s checkbox in the Songs view of Music on Mac to exclude it from ordinary playback without deleting it. The checked state applies across playlists containing that song. You can select the checkbox again when you want the track included, so distinguish this choice from removing a playlist entry.

To exclude a song from documented playback selection in Music on Mac, use the song checkbox in the Songs view. This is a reversible library control, not deletion, playlist removal, or hiding. It is useful when you want a track to stay in your library but not be included by Music in the behavior Apple describes for unchecked songs.

What this setting does

Apple documents this control as follows: in Music on Mac, choose Songs under Library, then deselect the checkbox next to a song. If checkboxes are not visible, choose Music > Settings, click General, and enable Songs list checkboxes. Apple also notes that deselecting a song’s checkbox removes the checkmark from that song in all playlists.

The practical point is narrow. The checkbox is a playback-selection control for songs in your Music library. When the checkmark is removed, the song remains present, but its checked state changes wherever that library song appears.

That playlist note is often the part people miss. If a track appears in several playlists, clearing the checkbox for the song is not limited to the playlist you happened to be thinking about. The song is still listed, but its checkmark is removed in playlists too.

The change is reversible. You can return to the Songs list and select the checkbox again. The checkbox action, by itself, does not erase the track, remove it from a playlist, hide a purchase, or rewrite details such as title, artist, album, rating, or artwork.

Before you change it

Before changing a checkbox, decide what problem you are solving. Similar-looking library cleanup actions can have very different results.

  • You want Music not to include the song in the documented checked-song playback behavior: use the song checkbox.
  • You only dislike the song in one playlist: edit that playlist instead of changing the song’s checked state.
  • You found a duplicate-looking item: compare the entries before changing anything. Similar titles may be different recordings, versions, or imports.
  • You no longer want an item in the library: deletion or removal is a different task from clearing a checkbox.
  • You want an account-related visibility change: do not treat the playback checkbox as a hiding control.

For a large library, test with one easy-to-find track first. Choose a song you can identify by title, artist, album, and duration. Clear its checkbox, look at how it appears in at least one playlist, then recheck it. That short test is safer than changing many songs based on assumptions.

If you are doing a cleanup session, keep a simple note outside Music. Record the date, the reason, and a few examples, such as “cleared checkboxes for seasonal songs” or “tested one live recording before changing the rest.” This does not change how Music works, but it helps you retrace your choices later.

Step-by-step

Use these steps in the Music app on Mac. The documented location for this control is the Songs view in the library.

  1. Open Music on your Mac. Work in the Mac Music app, not a web player or another device.
  2. Choose Songs. In the sidebar, select Songs under Library.
  3. Find the exact track. Check identifying details before changing the checkbox, especially if you have remasters, clean versions, live versions, or repeated imports.
  4. Clear the checkbox beside the song. Click the checkbox so the checkmark is removed. The song should remain listed.
  5. If no checkboxes appear, turn them on. Choose Music > Settings, click General, then make sure Songs list checkboxes is selected. Return to the Songs view and clear the song’s checkbox.
  6. Review playlist impact. If the track is in playlists, check at least one playlist and confirm that the removed checkmark is expected there too.

Do not confuse the checkbox with row highlighting. A highlighted row usually means the item is selected in the interface. The playback-selection state discussed here is the presence or absence of the checkmark in the song checkbox.

What it is not

Unchecking a song is not the same as deleting it. Deleting concerns whether an item remains in the library or, depending on the situation, whether related files are affected. The checkbox is narrower: it changes the song’s checked state for the documented playback behavior.

It is also not the same as removing a song from one playlist. Playlist removal changes membership in that playlist. Clearing the checkbox changes the song’s checked state, and Apple notes that the checkmark is removed from that song in all playlists. If your goal is “not in this playlist,” use playlist editing instead.

It is not the same as hiding music. Hiding and account visibility are separate from the song checkbox described here. Do not use the checkbox as a substitute for a visibility, purchase, or account-management action.

Finally, do not treat this checkbox as a security lock or a deletion substitute. The source documents a playback-prevention behavior, but a listening check cannot prove every possible playback path or prove bit-perfect output. If you need to know what happens when you manually click a particular unchecked song in your own setup, test that specific action and record what you observe.

Playlist effects

The most important side effect is playlist-wide visibility of the unchecked state. A song may appear as a row in several playlists, but the checkbox is tied to the song’s checked state, not only to the playlist you were viewing when you made the change.

Example: Maya has one library song called “Midnight Train” in three playlists: “Road Trip,” “Quiet Office,” and “Favorites from 2019.” She is tired of hearing it in office listening, so she goes to Songs and clears its checkbox. Later, she opens “Road Trip” and sees that the same song is unchecked there too. The song was not deleted and was not removed from those playlists. Its checkmark was removed wherever that song appears.

Before using the checkbox, ask: “Do I want this song treated this way across the library, or do I only want to change one playlist?” If the answer is one playlist, leave the checkbox alone and edit the playlist. If the answer is library-wide playback exclusion as documented by Music, the checkbox is the better fit.

For playlist-heavy libraries, identify where a song appears before changing it. See Find Which Playlists Contain a Song on Mac for a workflow that helps you understand playlist impact before you adjust the checkmark. If you use ratings, keep “I like this” separate from “include this in playback.” See Rate Your Songs in Music on Mac for more on that distinction.

Checking your work

After clearing a checkbox, verify the result without making more changes right away. First, confirm that the intended song is unchecked in the Songs list. Look closely at the title, artist, album, and duration if your library contains similar entries.

Second, open a playlist that contains the song. You are not checking whether the song was removed. You are checking whether the unchecked state appears there and whether that matches your intent.

Third, write down anything surprising. Useful notes include the song name, where you changed it, which playlist you checked afterward, and whether you rechecked it. This is especially helpful if you share library maintenance with another person or revisit cleanup work weeks later.

If the result is not what you wanted, return to Songs under Library and select the checkbox again. Then choose a more specific action, such as editing a playlist, rather than using the checkbox for a goal it was not meant to serve.

Simple decision guide

Goal Better action Why
Exclude a library song from the documented checked-song playback behavior Clear the song checkbox Keeps the song listed while changing its checked state
Remove a track from one playlist only Edit that playlist Avoids changing the song’s checkmark in other playlists
Keep a song but record your opinion of it Use a rating or another organization habit Separates preference from playback selection
Undo the exclusion Select the checkbox again in Songs Restores the checkmark without deleting or re-adding the song

Start with one track, confirm the playlist effect, and only then apply the same choice to more songs.

If you would like a different recording in your listening selection, search its song title and artist on Mp3Juice. Import a permitted local copy before adjusting its playback selection in Music.
